Today started with my arrival in Florence (read here). After a quick but informative orientation session (including us receiving all our student cards) we took a walk to our dinner location for today: a restaurant called Centopoveri on Via Palazzuolo.
The restaurant was not that well-lit and I didn’t want to upset the other patrons, so I decided not to use flash for the night: big mistake, and I apologize for the awful quality of the photos. We were led to a long rectangular table (which made it hard to see everybody) and since there were at least 20 of us, it made for a loud crowd. We were given bread and cheese to start with (I decided to dip my bread in olive oil and balsamic vinegar), and a choice between natural and fizzy water. I decided to try a sip of the wine (which ended up being okay), but I stuck to water for the rest of the night.
For our main meal we had two courses: a vegetable pasta, followed by a salad (?) and steak with vegetables (specifically spinach). I didn’t really like the pasta (it was way too oily for me) but I did like the steak – it was a perfectly-cooked medium rare. The spinach was sprinkled with truffle oil so I automatically did not end up liking it. The salad was basically slices of tomato, lettuce, and mozzarella on a plate – interesting, but I definitely needed that balsamic vinegar.
Overall it was an interesting start and my very first authentic Italian meal, so I’d give it a 3/5 for effort (the steak definitely saved the entire meal). I was more excited for what was promised as dessert: authentic Italian GELATO.
